Census 2020 Ends September 30th

2020 has been a whirlwind year. A global pandemic and worldwide protests, have significantly impacted our sense of normalcy. The 2020 Census was not unscathed as operations were set to launch right at the onset of COVID-19 earlier this spring. Census 2020 operations were due to launch March 1 and conclude by July 2020. As it turns out, the U.S. Census Bureau suspended operations due to the pandemic. Operations resumed late July and were originally scheduled to conclude by October 31st. They later changed the end date to September 30th - 1 month earlier than previously planned.

Communities of color, New Americans, apartment residents and other groups, are at risk of being undercounted due to the deadline change. Organizations nationwide have been organizing around Census outreach and engagement since 2018. Efforts by several stakeholders to have Congress maintain the original October 31st are in process. However, to date, the September 30th sunset remains in effect.

The Census takes place every 10 years to count every person living in American-regardless of their citizenship status. Census data influences development, resource allocation and funding support for several vital programs including SNAP, Pell Grants, early childhood learning, and infrastructure.  It is estimated that 800,000 African Americans were undercounted in the 2010 Census, with 1 in 3 Black men undercounted, as well as children under 5. An undercount can also mean the loss of Congressional representation and can impact how city and district ward lines are redrawn. Redistricting is slated to take place in 2021 once Census 2020 results are reported.
